Sub-voxel Medial Axis traces

Early results: April to June 2000

Breakthrough: by combining wave propagation on a discrete grid with local geometric computations of bisectors, I have achieved my first sub-voxel tracing of 3D shocks. Many refinements are now possible.

Abstract

I will present a wave propagation algorithm for computing medial axis surfaces, curves and nodes from 3D samples of surfaces, e.g. as obtained when scaning pottery sherds.

Joint work with Prof. Kimia.

Computed sub-voxel trace of medial sheets (white and blue nodes) and curves (green). In yellow are shown the samples of the original scan.
