Carpal Bone Segmentation from CT Images

The goal of this project is the semi-automatic segmentation of the carpal bones from a sequence of 2D CT images. Segmentation of the small and closely packed carpal bones has proved to be a challenging task for a variety of reasons: (i) texture in the bones (spongy bone); (ii) gaps present in the cortical bone (due to blood vessels); (iii) narrow gaps between the bones; and (iv) difference in contrast between the cortical bone and the spongy bone.

We have developed a segmentation technique, skeletally coupled deformable models

Some 2D slices segmented using SCDM. The segmentation results are overlayed on the original image.
