The Need for a New Approach to Database Management and 3D Visualization in Archaeology

by Diane Gilles and Fabienne Maile

Tuesday, August 28

Barus & Holley, Rm. 190 - Eng. bldg. ground floor, 2pm.

Abstract

We will focus on two points:

  1. We present a review of two ceramic construction techniques and an archaeological method employed in the reconstruction of pottery via manual drawing techniques. The manual drawing technique still used in Archaeology cannot give a complete reconstruction of the ceramic. This method could be improved by the applications provided of 3D data visualization to provide better results.

  2. We present the problem of accessibility of archaeological data as visual information. We consider the quantity of ceramic recovered on archaeological sites: the way they are used for registration, and the place they have in archaeological reports in terms of illustration. We conclude that a new approach to database management is needed combined with 3D visualization.

Speakers:

Fabienne and Diane, from Sorbonne, are visiting us over the 2001-2 academic school year. They are pursuing their PhD in archaeology with a focus on new technologies (including VR and scientific visualization).
